Silencing Anonymous Online Dissent

Twitter users jailed for critical tweets from anonymous accounts

In 2013, we released a report detailing how the Government of Bahrain de-anonymized twitter accounts, and then jailed the users for allegedly writing tweets critical of the government.

We were able to document eleven such cases. What the government typically does, is try to trick the owner of a twitter account to click on a malicious link, that will then reveal their IP address. The government can then force the Internet service provider to reveal the name and street address of who the IP address is assigned to.
