U.S. Universities and Free Expression in the Gulf

Human Rights Watch, NYU Law's Middle Eastern Law Students Association and International Law Society

A panel event co-hosted by Human Rights Watch, NYU Law's Middle Eastern Law Students Association and International Law Society at 6.30pm on April 13, 2017.

How can universities with ties to the Arab Gulf States exert a positive influence when the space for free expression and critical thought is shrinking? Since 2011, the Gulf states have engaged in a systematic assault on free speech to subvert the potentially transformative impact of social media and internet technology, through means including surveillance and torture. Please join us for a panel discussion on the interplay of free expression, state repression, and academic engagement in the Gulf.

Speakers:

Nicholas McGeehan, Gulf Researcher, Human Rights Watch Bill Marczak, Research Fellow, Citizen Lab Kristina Bogos, MA Candidate, Georgetown University Rick Hills, Professor, NYU Law

Moderator:

April Gu, Associate Director, NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights
